Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jadon Sancho has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, the club have announced.
The England international was taken off in the second half against Wolfsburg on Saturday and was unable to continue, having already suffered a thigh problem earlier this year.
Sancho had scored three goals in his last four Bundesliga appearances before he picked up the hamstring issue, which will rule him out until at least January next year.
It is a significant blow for Dortmund who were hoping to challenge for the title this season, but their campaign now looks over.
Dortmund manager Lucien Favre said: "We are very disappointed for Jadon as we hoped that he would be back soon after his thigh injury.
"But unfortunately, he will not be able to play any more games this season."
Favre added: "We know that it is a tough situation for Jadon and the whole squad,Premier League Updates but we must now concentrate on getting through the winter break and preparing for the new season."
Sancho's absence means that the team will need to find a replacement for his attacking threat, although there are plenty of options available.
However, it is clear that this is a big setback for Dortmund and they will now have to focus on rebuilding their squad for next season.
The club's board will no doubt be under pressure to make changes to the squad, with Sancho's departure likely to lead to a rethink of their transfer policy.
Overall, it is a disappointing update for Jadon Sancho and his fans, but it is also a reminder of the challenges facing football clubs in today's competitive market.
