Wang Shenchao, a prominent figure in Chinese history and one of the greatest military strategists of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), played a significant role in shaping the strategy for the Shanghai Port Defense. He was born in a humble family in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, and later became a soldier during the Boxer Rebellion against the Qing government.

In his lifetime, Wang Shenchao advocated for the construction of strong walls and fortifications to defend the port city of Shanghai. He believed that such defenses would be necessary to protect the city from any potential invasion by foreign powers.

In 1876, after the defeat of the Qing army at the Battle of Nanjing, Wang Shenchao returned to Shanghai and began planning for its defense. Today, the Shanghai Port Defense remains one of the most important and effective military installations in China. It serves as a deterrent against potential aggression and a symbol of national pride.
